Have you ever started out on a road trip only to find yourself meandering down an unexpected lane? You stop at a quaint little shop and discover fascinating curiosities? Eventually, you’re back behind the wheel traveling toward your intended destination…but now it has taken on a new meaning because you took time to explore. Career planning can be very similar. We pull out the map…plan the trip…but take advantage of the unexpected opportunities which help us to fine tune our direction.

Remember that “career” is a culmination of experiences and opportunities. It’s not always a linear path…or straight highway. Often, it’s the side roads we dare to travel that make the journey rich and exciting. I have a poster on my office wall that reads,

“I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I’ve landed where I’m intended to be.”
